As the number of sponsored students grew and were attending more than 70 different schools, it became difficult to know whether sponsors funds were being utilized effectively. We began facing unexpected challenges such as dealing with uncooperative and corrupt principals. This left us no choice but to purchase a failing girls boarding school and started operating our own girls boarding (Caring hearts High School) in 2015. We, however, continued sponsoring boys at different high schools. By 2020, we were convinced that we needed our own boys’ high school after our girls’ school became a regional academic powerhouse, ranked number 1 out of 52 schools in Matungulu Sub-County and 7 out 452 schools in Machakos County. We found out some girls would not go to class some days of the month due to lack of hygienic supplies. When students were sick and sent home for treatment, their families, that lacked food, could not afford to take the sick student to hospital. Another reality was that some of the structures used as house were completely inhabitable. One of the factors that we realized was affecting their performance was the deplorable conditions they were living in at home. They had no safe house for private studies and sometimes they had no food either. Most of the times they were sick by the time they reported back to school. That was when we decided to help them with basic modern houses that cost $3,500-$4,500 (including outdoor plumbing), that are safe and conducive for private studies. Keeping the girl child in school and medical support Worldwide studies have reported that more than 20 million girls, in developing nations, dropout of school, each year due to lack of feminine hygienic supplies. That is what we noticed in the first few years until when some courageous girls informed Dr. Kituku of their challenges to be in class for some days, each month. We immediately incorporated supporting girls as a major aspect of our mission. A significant number of our students join high school with sickness that, if they were treated earlier, would not be a problem. But because of the financial constraints of their families, minor illnesses are ignored until they become chronic. We provide medical support to sponsored students as needed. Food Relief Overwhelming majority of our students are from Ukambani, a semi-arid region that has unpredictable erratic rainfall, yet substance farming is the main source of livelihood. Lack of food, for low-or-no income families can lead to child-labor or young girls being forced into early marriage. However, needy orphans and other vulnerable children from poverty-stricken families, who even struggle to have meals, are not able to pay the average $725 a year for school fees that covers books, room and board and other school requirements. That forces them to remain in the cycle of poverty that plague their families and local communities. In 2010, Dr. Vincent Muli-Kituku founded Caring Hearts and Hands of Hope with the sole mission of providing educational sponsorship for the most hardworking, yet neediest of children. Number of currently sponsored students: 410 (254 girls and 156 boys) students in high school 225 students in university and vocational training colleges 100+ students have graduated from universities since 2010. We expect to have more 50 students graduating each year from 2023.
